Help set your child up for the school year

The academic year can be challenging for a child with ADHD. Expected classroom behavior such as sitting still, paying attention, and staying organized may be difficult for him or her.

You can help by giving your child tools and strategies to make school a positive experience.

Before the school year starts

Partner with your child, his or her doctor, and his or her teacher to help set goals and manage expectations for the year ahead.

TALKING TO YOUR CHILD
  • Set up goals and rewards to create clear expectations for your child
  • Goals can be short-term, such as extra television time for completing assignments, or long-term, such as a special trip for a good report card
TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR
  • Ensure that your child has a treatment plan for the school year ahead
  • Follow up with an appointment a few weeks into the semester to check in and address any concerns
TALKING TO THE TEACHER
  • Let the school know that your child has been diagnosed with ADHD
  • Find out how to maintain communication with the teacher so you can keep track of projects and assignments

During the school year

Here are some tips to help your child stay organized and on track during the year:

Tip #1: Maintain a planner

  • The planner can be paper or electronic (phone, tablet, laptop, etc)
  • Encourage your child to record everything he or she needs to finish, and by when
  • Together, you and your child should check the planner daily to make sure he or she is on track with assignments

Tip #2: Keep an extra set of textbooks at home

  • Talk to your child’s school and find out if it is possible to get 2 sets of textbooks
  • With an extra set of textbooks at home, you and your child do not have to worry about completing assignments if he or she forgets a textbook at school

Tip #3: Create consistent routines

  • Establish predictable routines and structure that can help your child accomplish short- and long-term goals
  • Set aside the same time every day for homework, tutors, and other after-school activities
  • Keep a master calendar in a central place and refer to it every day

Tip #4: Motivate your child with positive reinforcement

  • Children with ADHD respond best to positive feedback; therefore, it is important to give immediate praise for behaviors that you want to encourage
